The Alberta Aboriginal Relations Aboriginal Woman Entrepreneur Award of Distinction recognizes outstanding achievement by aboriginal women entrepreneurs that:

  • best exemplifies effective leadership, innovation, capacity building, and sustainability;
  • demonstrates cultural, social and environmental awareness; and
  • demonstrates a commitment to enhancing the well being of the larger aboriginal community.

One of the goals of Alberta Aboriginal Relations is to enhance the well being and self reliance of aboriginal communities. Aboriginal women entrepreneurs are positive role models for aboriginal women and youth, and play an important role in reaching this goal.

You may provide brief answers in this online form and submit it electronically. You may also print this form out, answer the questions with more detail and send samples or other supporting documents, if you wish.

General Eligibility Requirements

To be a valid entry in the Alberta Business Awards of Distinction, your business must:

  • have operated in Alberta for a minimum of three years;
  • be operating in Alberta and continue to do so at the time of the awards presentation;
  • employ Albertans to produce goods and/or provide services;
  • not have won in the same category in the past three years; and
  • not have anyone in your management, on your board, or in your employ serving on the Alberta Business Awards of Distinction judging committee for this category.

Specific Eligibility Requirements

In addition to the General Eligibility, applicants must meet the following specific requirements. To begin your application process, please provide details for each requirement as it relates to your organization in the space provided.

1. Two or more persons may be nominated if their contributions to the business are considered equally significant

2. The nominee(s) must be of Métis, Inuit, or First Nations descent

3. The nominee(s) must have played a direct and primary role in the planning and establishment of the business, and currently be operating it in a leadership capacity

4. The business must demonstrate financial viability and sound potential for growth

Category Guidelines

1. Describe the business—its history, products and/or services, financial and other performance indicators, markets and plans for growth, etc.

2. Describe the direct role and contributions of the nominee(s) in the planning, establishment, and ongoing operation of the business

3. Provide a resume or biographical profile for the nominee(s) that includes a description of business-related education or training received and direct involvement in the day-to-day management of the business

4. Discuss challenges the nominee(s) encountered in planning, establishing, and operating the business, and explain how they were overcome

5. Describe any unique or innovative aspects of the business and/or the nominee(s) such as: commitment to education and lifelong learning; any workforce development initiatives; environment and sustainability measures; aboriginal employment programs or other means of engaging aboriginal people in business opportunities and activities; and leader’s commitment or workforce programs designed to encourage good citizenship, community development, or volunteer activities

Premier's Award of Distinction

Finalists in all award categories are eligible for the Premier’s Award of Distinction and must complete the form fields below with this specific category entry application to be eligible for the Premier’s Award.

1. Working in Alberta's unique and fast-paced environment of open business opportunities, and its globally competitive and inclusive culture, explain how your company demonstrates excellence.

2. Explain how your company demonstrates a commitment to diversity. Identify what you have done to further social integration for Albertans.

3. In your words, what does the Alberta Advantage mean, and how does your business embody it?

Entry Deadline:

In order to be eligible, your submission must be delivered to the Alberta
Chambers of Commerce office no later than 4:00 p.m., November 12, 2010.

Due to the number of entries received, entry packages cannot be returned.
